About the Event
For years, Cabernet Franc has always taken the back seat in relation to other more "mainstream" varietals — often blended with bigger name grapes like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to create gorgeous wines. But in recent years, it has come into its own as a stand-alone varietal.
But did you know that CabFranc is the parent grape along with Sauvignon Blanc to Cabernet Sauvignon?? DNA analysis showed that Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc actually combined to produce Cabernet Sauvignon. That means that this is an old varietal, and one that has had a deep impact on the world of wine.
Cabernet Franc is grown all over the world, but it’s most famous in its native France. In Bordeaux, the early-ripening grape is most important as a blending component with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, while in the Loire Valley it takes center stage.
During this class we will explore CabFranc in it's many iterations, with attention to:
- The Difference in styles created in the Loire Valley AoC's of Chinon, Anjou and Bourgueil.
- New World variations from California
- How Cab Franc differs in the southern hemisphere countries of Argentina (more notable for Malbec) and Chile
